Who this route suits

  • Adaptable students who want a new cultural experience
  • Students interested in engineering, business or other programmes taught in English
  • Students who want strong programmes at a moderate cost
  • Families who have researched the course and its recognition carefully

How the China study visa process works

  1. Choose your programme and university, checking teaching language and recognition.
  2. Apply and receive your admission notice and the visa application form (JW201 or JW202) from the university.
  3. Complete a physical examination and prepare your passport and photos.
  4. Apply for an X1 student visa at the Chinese visa centre.
  5. Travel and register in China. Students with an X1 visa convert it into a residence permit after arrival.

Usual timeline

Admission usually takes a few weeks, and visa processing after you hold your admission documents is often completed within days at the visa centre. Allow 6 to 10 weeks overall. Times vary by university and season.

Questions about China

Do I need to speak Chinese?

Many universities offer programmes in English, but learning some Chinese helps daily life a lot. Some programmes require Chinese proficiency.

What visa do I need for study over six months?

An X1 student visa, which is then converted into a residence permit after you arrive.

Will my degree be recognised back home?

Recognition depends on your field and the regulator in your country. Check this before applying, especially for medicine, engineering and other regulated professions.
