New Zealand skilled migrant changes from August 2026

A short guide to the new pathways introduced on 24 August 2026, and who they may help.

New Zealand updated its Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa with changes taking effect on 24 August 2026. If you are thinking about New Zealand, here is what is new, in simple terms.

The existing 6-point pathway stays

The points-based pathway continues. Among the changes, points for bachelor’s degrees and certain related qualifications rose from three to four, and Level 8 or 9 qualification claims generally need a supporting bachelor’s degree.

Two new pathways

  1. Skilled Work Experience Pathway. For people working in skilled roles (ANZSCO skill levels 1 to 3). It generally needs at least five years of directly relevant work experience, including at least two years in New Zealand at a wage of 1.1 times the SMC median wage or more. No points are needed.
  2. Trades and Technician Pathway. For people with a relevant Level 4 or higher qualification, at least four years of post-qualification experience, and at least 18 months of that in New Zealand at or above the median wage. The occupation must be on the approved list.

Other points to know

  • Applicants generally need to be 55 or younger.
  • The wage threshold used is the one in place when you started gaining skilled New Zealand experience.
  • Self-employment cannot be used as relevant work experience for the two new pathways.
  • Genuine, ongoing employment is assessed more strictly.

What this means for work visa applicants

For many people the path to New Zealand begins with a work visa, usually through an accredited employer, followed later by residence. That makes the employer connection the key first step. We help you understand the permit, prepare your profile and connect with employers where roles are available.
